The Big Sky Conference Gets First FCS Win
NAU improves to 1-1 with strong offensive performance
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - The Northern Arizona University football team scored on eight straight possessions and held NCAA Division II Lincoln (Calif.) to just 156 yards of total offense as the Lumberjacks earned their first win of the season, 66-6, in front of 6,507 fans at the Walkup Skydome on Saturday night.
After a slow start that saw them punt on their first two possessions, the Lumberjacks found their rhythm and scored on eight straight possessions to build a 56-0 lead early in the fourth quarter. The Lumberjacks scored on a variety of plays, including a 75-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Case Cookus to sophomore wide receiver Emmanuel Butler.
Cookus finished the game with 247 yards passing and three touchdowns, while Butler had 100 yards receiving and two touchdowns.
- The Lumberjacks also got a strong performance from their running game, as sophomore running back Joe Logan rushed for 102 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries.
- NAU's defense was also impressive, holding Lincoln to just 156 yards of total offense and forcing three turnovers.
- The Lumberjacks also blocked a punt and returned it for a touchdown.
The win was NAU's first over a Division II opponent since 2015, when they defeated Western New Mexico 56-0.
The Lumberjacks will now have a bye next week before opening Big Sky Conference play at Montana State on Sept. 15.
